How can we help you?

How can I author home movies so they are read by my Kaleidescape System?

Just like commercial movies, home movies can be added to your Kaleidescape system. It is important, however, that the authoring of a home movie to a DVD or Blu-ray disc is done correctly. Guidelines for making home-authored DVDs and Blu-ray discs can be found below.

Be aware that unlike most commercial movies, home movies will not be recognized by the Kaleidescape Movie Guide once added to your Kaleidescape system.

DVD
Home video created on most software applications can be successfully added to your system. The entire DVD menu structure is added as authored. Content can be added in DVD-Video format from DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW discs.

NOTE: Strato systems do not support the import of discs. Home authored DVDs may be cataloged so that they can be shown in the onscreen user interface, just like content downloaded from the Kaleidescape Movie Store.

While most home authored DVDs are not protected, CSS-protected DVDs will not import to a Premiere systems or Cinema One purchased from Kaleidescape after November 30th, 2014. For more information, visit CSS-Protected-DVD-FAQs.

The table below lists the requirements for home-authored DVD-Video

Video ResolutionFull D1, 720×480 (NTSC) or 720×576 (PAL)
or

Half D1, 352×480 (NTSC) or 352×576 (PAL)
Video FormatMPEG-2
Frame Rate29.97 frames/second (NTSC) or 25 frames/second (PAL)
AudioPCM 48 kHz 16 bit, DTS, Dolby Digital, or MP2

Note: To use analog outputs from Dolby Digital, resolution must
be 2.0 or 5.1. Analog outputs may not be available from DTS.

If a DVD is authored using MPEG-2 video and MPEG-1 Audio Layer II (MP2) audio, use the analog audio outputs on Kaleidescape components, or use HDMI and verify that the A/V processor supports MP2. (Most North American A/V receivers do not.)

Blu-ray discs
There are two types of Blu-ray discs available: BDMV and BDAV.

BDMV
Alto, Cinema One (2nd generation), M500 players, Disc Vaults and Disc Servers can read home movies on BDMV discs which have disc menus.

BDMV Blu-ray discs can be created using ImgBurn 2.5.1.0, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate, Roxio DVDit Pro HD, Corel DVD Movie Factory Pro 7, Nero Vision Xtra, and CyberLink PowerProducer.

NOTE: Strato systems do not support the import of discs. Home authored Blu-ray discs may be cataloged so that they can be shown in the onscreen user interface, just like content downloaded from the Kaleidescape Movie Store.

A home-authored Blu-ray disc (unencrypted Blu-ray movie) imported to a Premiere system or Cinema One does NOT have to be present in the system to play from the server.

BDAV
Blu-ray discs authored with direct-to-disc or right-to-disc methods do not have disc menus. BDAV discs cannot be read by Kaleidescape Systems at this time.

AVCHD
Kaleidescape does not currently support the AVCHD format.
