How can we help you?

How do I access the browser interface remotely?

The best way to gain remote access to the browser interface of your Kaleidescape System is to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). The installer can then service the system remotely and the user can review their movie and music libraries from the office.

With a VPN, a remote user, once authenticated, will effectively become part of the local network, with any data sent across the Internet encrypted for security. Any components that are part of your Kaleidescape System will be directly accessible to the remote user via its IP address. Alternatively, if NetBIOS broadcasts are enabled and the remote user is on the same subnet as the Kaleidescape System, the browser interface can be accessed using http://my-kaleidescape (on a Mac, using http://my-kaleidescape.local).

Setting up a VPN requires the installation of a VPN device alongside your Kaleidescape System. Your router must also be configured to enable VPN passthrough. The remote user will either need a corresponding VPN device or special software to initiate the connection to your network; consult your VPN provider’s documentation for additional information. The remote user will also need to know your Wide Area Network (WAN) address, the public IP address assigned to your network by your Internet provider.

We do not recommend that you access the Kaleidescape browser interface by enabling port forwarding on your router. When port forwarding is disabled, your router protects devices inside your network by blocking any outside attempt to access your network. When port forwarding is enabled, this protection is turned off, potentially permitting anyone on the Internet to access your network and your Kaleidescape System. If you choose to enable port forwarding, the best practice would be to forward a random external port (any number between 1000 and 65535) to internal port 443 on your Kaleidescape System. For example, if your WAN IP address is 10.100.1.39, and you choose to forward port 43342, the remote user would then access your Kaleidescape System with the URL https://10.100.1.39:43342/. You should also set a password for the browser interface, and if your router supports it, restrict access to the forwarded port to the IP address of the remote user.
