How can we help you?

My Kaleidescape System cannot connect to the internet

The Kaleidescape System requires a high-speed Internet connection in order to access Kaleidescape services such as the Movie Guide, the Music Guide, software updates, and system monitoring and alerts.

Checking the Basics

When the Kaleidescape System is unable to connect to the Internet, start by checking basic Internet connectivity on the network. From a computer on the same network, try visiting a public web site such as http://www.kaleidescape.comIf this is unsuccessful, check that the installation site is connected to the Internet through a high-speed modem and that this device is powered on and connected to the network. In addition to a high-speed modem, a router may be required in order to access the Internet, and often times a network switch is installed; check that these devices are powered on and connected to the network. If the hardware appears to be working fine and the Internet cannot be accessed, contact your Internet Service Provider.

If you are able to access the public web site, connect the computer to the same network connection used by the Kaleidescape server or player that is unable to access the Internet — use the exact same network cable connected to the exact same port on the switch or router. Next, temporarily disable the wireless network connection on the computer (if applicable) and try again to visit a public web site. If this is unsuccessful, check that the switch or router is powered on and connected to the network, and replace the network cable. If the Internet cannot be accessed using the same network connection as the player or server, contact your network administrator.

Recording Computer Network Settings

If your computer is able to access the Internet, but your Kaleidescape System cannot, you may need to change some of the network settings for your Kaleidescape System so they match those of your computer. After checking the basics, find and record the network settings of your computer.

Windows

1. In Windows 8.x, press the Windows key + r. The Run window appears.

2. Type cmd and press Enter. The command prompt window appears.

3. Skip to step 6.

4. In Windows 7 and earlier, click on the Start menu, and then select All Programs.

5. Click on Accessories, and then select Command PromptThe command prompt window appears.

6. At the command prompt, enter ipconfig /all. Information for the Windows IP configuration appears.

7. Find the section labeled Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection.

NOTE: If Media State says Media disconnected, look for another section labeled Ethernet Local Area Connection.

8. Make a note if DHCP enabled says Yes or No, and write down the IPv4 Address, the Subnet Mask, and the Default Gateway.

Mac OS X

1. Click on the Apple menu in the top left corner and select System Preferences. The System Preferences window appears.

2. Click on the Network icon under Internet & Network. The Network window appears.

3. From the list of networks on the left, select the active wired network.

4. Click on the Advanced button in the bottom right corner.

5. Make a note if Configure IPv4 says Using DHCP or Manually, and write down the IPv4 Address, the Subnet Mask, and the Router address (this is also referred to as the default gateway).

Changing Kaleidescape Network Settings

After recording the network settings of your computer, check the network settings for your Kaleidescape system, and prepare to make any changes. If you are not familiar with the configuration of your network or how the control system is programmed, consult your network administrator and your programmer before making any changes to the network settings. Failing to do so, may result in the system becoming inoperable or uncontrollable.

On-screen User Interface

On Cinema One (2nd generation), the network settings must be configured in the on-screen user interface. On Kaleidescape Strato and Kaleidescape Alto, the network settings can be configured from both the on-screen user interface and the browser interface.

1. Press the Menu button on the Kaleidescape Remote, or press Menu on the Remote Control page of the Kaleidescape iPad App, or press the Kaleidescape logo in the top left corner of a touch panel using a Kaleidescape control template.

2. Use the arrow buttons to highlight System, then select Settings. The Settings page appears.

3. Select Network.

4. When recording the computer network settings, if you wrote down Yes for DHCP enabled (Windows), or Use DHCP for Configure IPv4 (Mac), then your computer is assigned a dynamic IP address by the DHCP server (generally located in the router). Configure the network settings for the player with that in mind.
  • If the top options say Release and renew IP address, the player is also set to a dynamic IP address. If the Default Gateway does not match the one noted for your computer, there is very likely a second DHCP server on the network. Having two DHCP servers on the same network is not a recommended practice and one of them should be disabled or removed from the network.
  • If the top option says Change the static IP configuration, the player is set to a static IP address. Change it so it acquires an IP address automatically by selecting Switch to getting IP address automatically via DHCP.
5. When recording the computer network settings, if you wrote down No for DHCP enabled (Windows), or Manually for Configure IPv4 (Mac), then your computer is configured with a static IP address. Configure the network settings for the player with that in mind.
  • If the top options say Release and renew IP address, the player is set to a dynamic IP address. Change it to a static IP address by selecting Set static IP configuration. Complete the static IP configuration after reading the Considerations when Setting a Static IP Address section at the bottom of this article. Select Accept these settings when done.
  • If the top option says Change the static IP configuration, the player is set to a static IP address. Select this option. Update the static IP configuration after reading the Considerations when Setting a Static IP Address section at the bottom of this article. Select Accept these settings when done.
6. Changes to the network configuration take effect a short time after being modified; there is no need to reboot the player when changing network settings in the on-screen user interface.

Browser Interface

Network settings are configured from the browser interface on Strato systems and Premiere systems. The browser interface must be accessed from a device connected to the same local network as the Strato system or Premiere system.

1. Open a web browser and enter: 2. Select the Settings tab.

3. Select Components from the second row of tabs if not already selected.

4. Click the Settings button to the right of the server or player that cannot connect to the Internet. A new window appears.

5. Select the Network tab.

6. When recording the computer network settings, if you wrote down Yes for DHCP enabled (Windows), or Use DHCP for Configure IPv4 (Mac), then your computer is being assigned a dynamic IP address by the DHCP server (generally in the router). Configure the network settings for the server with that in mind.
  • If the server or player is set to Obtain IP configuration automatically using DHCP, check the current network configuration. If the Default Gateway does not match the one noted for your computer, there is very likely a second DHCP server on the network. Having two DHCP servers on the same network is not a recommended practice and one of them should be disabled or removed from the network.
  • If the server or player is set to Use the following IP configuration, change it to Obtain IP configuration automatically using DHCP.
7. When recording the computer network settings, if you wrote down No for DHCP enabled (Windows), or Manually for Configure IPv4 (Mac), then your computer is configured with a static IP address. Configure the network settings for the server with that in mind.
  • If the server or player is set to Obtain IP configuration automatically using DHCP, change it to Use the following IP configuration and complete the static IP configuration after reading the Considerations when Setting a Static IP Address section at the bottom of this article.
  • If the server or player is set to Use the following IP configuration, update the static IP configuration after reading the Considerations when Setting a Static IP Address section at the bottom of this article.
8. Once the settings are correctly entered, Click OK. The window is dismissed.

9. For the new network settings to take effect, the server or player must be restarted. If you are not prompted to restart the component, a restart can be initiated from the Components page by clicking the Restart button to the right of the server or player.

Considerations when Setting a Static IP Address

When assigning a static IP address to a Kaleidescape component, use the same subnet mask and default gateway you wrote down when recording the computer network settings, and use a public DNS server like 8.8.8.8 or 4.2.2.2. The first three numbers of the IP address being assigned to the component should match those for your computer, but the last number must be different. When choosing the last number, make sure the resulting address is outside the range of addresses assigned by the DHCP server (this can usually be checked in the router settings). Also, make sure that the resulting address is not in use by another network device. If you are uncertain what address to use, contact your network administrator.
