Strato M is Kaleidescape's new entry-level movie player. Providing lossless audio and reference-quality 2K video output with better than Blu-ray quality, Strato M works on its own or as part of a larger Kaleidescape system.
As a standalone system, Strato M provides a single playback zone that holds a half-dozen movies on an internal solid-state drive — downloading a movie in about ten minutes over gigabit Ethernet. It features a streamlined interface, optimized for navigating a small movie library, offering automatic offloading of watched movies 48 hours after playback to make room for more movies. Purchased movies can be re-downloaded at any time.
Strato M can also be grouped with Terra Prime movie servers to increase movie storage. This returns Strato M's interface to the full Kaleidescape user experience while maintaining the enhanced Collections view. Any combination of Strato V, Strato C, and Strato M movie players can be grouped with one or more Terra movie servers to fit your entertainment needs.
Strato M supports lossless multi-channel and spatial object-based audio, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Strato M supports reference 2K video, with higher bit rates and bit depths than Blu-ray, including Dolby Vision, HDR10, BT.2020 color space, and 4:2:2 chroma sampling.
Kaleidescape Strato M provides access to the Kaleidescape movie store, the world’s only digital movie collection with lossless audio and full reference video quality. The movie store offers thousands of 4K and HD movies for purchase or rent, including movies, TV series, and concerts. Kaleidescape movies are downloaded, not streamed, so there is never buffering or loss in quality.
Strato M can download and play 4K content, but video output will be downscaled to 2K 4:2:2 even if the player is connected to a 4K display.
Yes. You can expand the storage capacity of your system by adding a Terra or Terra Prime movie server. However, when you do so, the Strato M player will switch to grouped mode which disables its internal storage drive and deletes any downloaded content. Any content that was stored on that drive will need to be redownloaded to the Terra server.
Strato M has onboard solid-state storage to hold half a dozen movies. Movies download in about 10 minutes over a gigabit network. Downloads continue even while watching previously downloaded movies although at a reduced speed.
When in standalone mode, Strato M:
Storage and playback zones can be expanded by grouping it with a Terra Prime movie server. This will change Strato M from standalone to grouped mode.
When Strato M is grouped with a system that includes a Terra or Terra Prime movie server, it automatically switches to grouped mode. In this mode, all movies in onboard storage are deleted and storage is disabled. These movies will need to be redownloaded to the Terra Prime server. Strato M will then view and play movies stored on the servers in the system.
To return Strato M to standalone mode — with the power on — initiate a factory reset by pressing and holding the pinhole reset button on the Strato M back panel for 5 seconds until the internal LEDs begin blinking. The Strato M will reboot and switch to standalone mode. When reactivated in standalone mode, the onboard storage will be empty.
Strato M is not optimized to operate as a player and a server, so the internal storage is disabled when the player is grouped with a Terra Prime server.
Strato M has a solid-state drive large enough to store half a dozen 4K movies. However, this storage is available only when Strato M is operating in standalone mode.
You can delete content to free up space using the “Delete Movie” option on the player’s onscreen display, or remotely from the Kaleidescape movie store using the mobile app or a web browser.
A Strato M in standalone mode will automatically mark previously downloaded movies that have been in the “Played” collection for at least 48 hours as candidates for deletion. These movies will then be deleted automatically, as needed, to free enough storage space for new download(s).
Add it to the “Favorites” collection. Movies that have been in the “Played” collection the longest will be selected first. If you want to ensure that a particular movie is not marked as a candidate for automatic deletion, add it to the “Favorites” collection via the Collections flyout on the movie detail sheet on the onscreen display.
Yes. Your system will automatically download the suggested version based on the capabilities of the audio processor and display. To take full advantage of Strato M’s Dolby Vision playback capabilities, a Dolby Vision version of the movie must be downloaded to the system. In almost all cases, at the time of purchase, the Kaleidescape store will automatically detect your Strato M player and download the correct Dolby Vision version.
When configured to minimize display mode changes, Strato M will convert HDR10 content to Dolby Vision format for playback on a Dolby Vision display.
If a Strato M player is connected to a display that supports HDR10 but not Dolby Vision, then the player will play Dolby Vision and HDR10 movies in HDR10 format on that display.
Yes. Movies rented on the Kaleidescape movie store can be played by Strato M in either standalone mode or when grouped with a server. Rentals are automatically removed from onboard storage after they expire.
No. Strato M can only play movies downloaded from the Kaleidescape movie store. It cannot play disc-based content of any format.
When full, Strato M automatically frees up space for new movie downloads by removing movies you’ve already watched as necessary. For movie lovers who want to keep their movies available on demand, you can add a movie server.
You can also manually delete content to free up space using the “Delete Movie” option on the player’s onscreen display, or remotely from the Kaleidescape movie store using the mobile app or a web browser.
If you have played a movie on Strato M but do not want it to be automatically deleted, open the movie details page, scroll down to Collections, and add it to “Favorites”. Adding your movie to the “Favorites” collection will ensure it stays on your system until you remove it from “Favorites” or manually delete it from your player.
Strato M players cannot be grouped directly with other Strato M players; they require a Terra or Terra Prime movie server to group. Without a server, each player operates in standalone mode as a separate, unique system.
There are no limitations on the number of Strato M players that can be grouped with a Terra Prime movie server. However, it is recommended that the number of players in the system be limited to the servers’ maximum guaranteed concurrent playbacks as specified in the Kaleidescape System Server and Component Limits Knowledge Base article.
Kaleidescape does not distribute HDR10+ content. When connected to an HDR10+ capable display device, Strato M can play any downloaded HDR10 content. In addition, any downloaded Dolby Vision content will be converted to HDR10 for playback.
Strato M does not have a dedicated, audio-only HDMI port; it has a single, dedicated HDMI output for both audio and video.
A Strato M player in grouped mode can be part of a system that includes a Terra Prime movie server that also has one or more Strato V and/or Strato C players grouped with it. Only the Strato M and Strato V players can play downloaded Dolby Vision content.
Strato M plays a different HD movie format than earlier Kaleidescape players. By launch, most but not all HD content in the store will have been transcoded to be playable on Strato M. More will come over time. Be sure to download movie updates as they become available. All SD and 4K store content will play on Strato M.
A Strato V and Strato M compatibility report is available on the Kaleidescape movie store to view movies that are playable on Strato M, movies that require an update to be playable on Strato M, and movies that are not yet playable on Strato M.
Yes. Refer to the Registering Discs for Disc-to-Digital Offers Using an External USB Blu-ray Drive Knowledge Base article for full instructions. DVDs and Blu-ray discs that have been cataloged will not appear on the Strato M’s onscreen display and will not be playable.
Strato M does not support Co-Star pairing. If Co-Star support is required, a Strato V or Strato C should be chosen for that zone.
No. Strato M can only play movies downloaded from the Kaleidescape store. It cannot play disc-based content of any format.
Kaleidescape, at their discretion, may provide software updates periodically throughout the year that are automatically rolled out to products, including Strato M, which provide enhancements to user experience, new features, and bug fixes. There is no cost associated to customers to receive these updates, and no action is required.
Strato M does not directly support Wi-Fi networking. The only means of connecting Strato M to a network is via the rear panel Ethernet port. A hard-wired Ethernet connection with internet access is required to receive software updates and download content from the Kaleidescape store.
If a wired network is unavailable, consider a Wi-Fi bridge or a powerline/coax adapter when operating the Strato M in standalone mode. Connecting the Strato M to a Terra Prime server via these means is not supported.
